As you can see in the photo, the little guy doesn't look much like a parrotlet yet.
The first parrotlet chick hatched some time today. It seems to be nice and healthy so now it's one down, five to go.

I candled the parrotlet eggs today and of the 7, 5 are definitely fertile, I’m not sure about 1 and 1 looks to be infertile. This means that barring any disasters, I should have a baby parrotlets ready in 9-10 weeks from now. The first egg is due to hatch an about a week. I’ll update here as chicks manage to hatch. Sometimes chicks and eggs can have problems so I can't promise that all of the eggs will end up as parrotlets. However the eggs are all a nice size and shape so fingers crossed! For those who are interested here's a photo of the eggs. They're about 1.6 cm long so they're pretty tiny. The 2 eggs that look more beige coloured are the ones that are either newly laid or infertile. Bonus photo of my Mum's Tiggy being adorable! Tiggy is one of Squid and Bean's chicks from last year. I decided to candle the 4 eggs that the greens have so far. Some are too young to show anything but the third egg that I checked was fertile! I didn't bother to check the last one because I'll candle them all again 5 days after the 6th egg and I don't really like to handle them too much.
Just checked the green's box and saw a new egg in there. I'll update in a week or so when I've be able to say if the eggs look like they're fertile or not.
Well Squid (green hen) laid a clutch of 6 eggs but they were all clear. She seems to trying again now so fingers crossed that this lot actually hatch.
My dilute yellows are starting to show more interest in their next box so hopefully they'll start doing something soon. Likewise my younger pair of sierras are starting to look like they might be considering breeding. |
