One of the green hens is available to reserve. See 'availability' for more details.
Here's a photo of the two girls and the fallow boy. They look a bit scruffy for now but it won't be too long before their feathers finish growing.
There are now two chicks that will come out of the nest box and all of them have already got the idea of eating millet when it's offered. One of the green hens is available to reserve. There are sadly now only four chicks as once suddenly died in the night from a rupture where the yolk gets reabsorbed. I'd never heard of it before but it turns out this is a thing that can happen to chicks.
The good news is that the other four are all big and strong, they range in age from 3 to 4 weeks. They have enough wing feathers now to be able to tell that there is a fallow cock, a green cock and two green hens. Unfortunately Bean, the father decided to try to pluck out their feathers so he's now been removed and they're growing again. For the past few days they have been peeking out of the nest entrance and today the eldest chick came out by himself for the first time. The five little chicks are doing well. They range from around 24g to 31g (there's an age gap of a week) and the eldest three now have long enough wing feathers to be sexed. So far there's one boy and two hens. Fingers crossed that the youngest two will also be boys!
The eldest two are now three weeks old so they've started to come out of the box for short cuddling sessions. There are 5 chicks at the moment. The oldest one is already starting to get pin feathers so I'll probably start being able to tell their sex in another week or so.
I heard a chick today so it looks like at least one of the eggs was fertile. I'm trying to do minimum disturbance while the chicks are tiny so I'll update again in a couple of weeks when I know what's what!
I've just realised that my last entry here didn't actually publish properly! So the old news is that the little hen went off to a nice new home and Squid and Bean the green/pied parrotlets now have 6 eggs which I hope have little chicks developing inside them.
The oldest hen is now available for sale. She's tame if rather opinionated about not having her millet taken away. She steps up and down, does recall (most of the time) and I've been getting her to snuggle on my shoulder in the evenings. Please feel free to contact me for more information. The greens have also laid another egg so there might be more chicks on the way. Last Thursday, the youngest girl went off to her new home where she's already much loved.
The older girl is still with me but she's ready for a new home. Matt, if you read this please could you contact me to let me know whether you're still going to take her. Either email me or call/text me on 07783 508279 The chicks are both 8 weeks old this week. They've been in a cage on their own for a week now. They've been practising stepping up and being in a cage on their own so that going to a new home won't be too much of a shock for them. The chick on the left is the older chick, she's the normal green and on the right is her younger sister. Here's the older chick again. She's nearly fully feathered now, she just needs to fill in her rump and those little patches near her ears. Here's the younger chick. She's still got a few patches to fill in but her pin feathers show that it won't be too long until she's pretty. |
